GPA expects to have 30% of eggs coming from cage-free farms in 2020
The company’s goal is valid for their own brands, Qualitá and Taeq, and includes a deadline of 2028, for suppliers to be in line with the company
GPA announced their new commitment with animal well-being, promising to have until the end of the year, at least 30% of the eggs sold by their own brands, Qualitá and Taeq, from cage-free farms. According to GPA’s director of sustainability, Susy Yoshimura, from 2028 on, the Brazilian retail giant will no longer sell products from battery-cage farms.
Since the company started to monitor its suppliers, in 2016, only 9% of all suppliers met this condition. However, the rate of companies currently meeting this requirement is 25% among the brands that are part of the eggs category at GPA.
In addition to the eggs, the retail company has established goals for the well-being of animals in gestation period, aiming at ending the use of cages to confine chickens during this period. According to André Artin, GPA’s trade manager, until the end of 2028 both measures will be completely implemented.
