Supermarket sales in May outperformed April, according to survey

Study by IBGE shows that sales in the Brazilian supermarket sector increased 7.4% in the period

Supermarkets are part of the only category of the Brazilian commerce that registered sales increase in the month of May, when compared to the same month of 2019.  According to the Monthly Commerce Survey, carried out by IBGE, transactions increased 7.4% between April and May.

On the other hand, when considering the previous months to the mentioned period, namely March and April, IBGE’s study shows that supermarket sales in the country dropped 11.5%. Despite the good results in May, the survey estimates a decrease of 3.4% in transactions made in Brazilian supermarkets during 2020.
