Project financed by the country’s Environmental Fund provides collection machines in supermarkets available until June 2021
From January 2020 consumers in Portugal who return plastic bottles to supermarkets in the country get discounts on purchases. The pilot project will give discount vouchers to those who put empty plastic packaging in one of the 23 machines throughout the country.
At this first moment, the machines will only be able to receive plastic packaging of water and soft drinks. For each 0.5 liter plastic bottle, the reimbursement will be two euro cents, while those with a capacity of up to 2 liters can generate five euro cents.
The Environmental Fund expectation is that the action will end in June 2021 and may become a permanent collection point for these materials. The European country generates about 77 thousand tons of plastic per year and therefore contributes directly to the waste of this material.
