Retail chain points of sales undergo reopening based on four pillars: Experimental; Exclusive; Social; and Fluid
GPA’s operation continues to evolve rapidly in relation to the supermarket sector. In Rio de Janeiro the retail chain opens three new stores that reach the seventh generation in modern and technological format. Since 2017, this “lab” store format is being implemented on the chain bringing lessons mainly from the consumer feedback.
This year GPA invests in the reopening of three units in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, in the Recreio, Leblon and Ingá neighborhoods. From now on, these stores will operate on a new concept that, for the chain itself, already brings the return on performance, with 12% more sales than previous generations other stores.
Altogether, the chain expects to apply the concept to another 63 units by the first quarter of 2020. Generation 7 stores follow four pillars to provide a different consumer experience for the consumer:
From these concepts, GPA is able to integrate digital transformation into its shopping journey, besides valuing green spaces, sustainable products, a greater assortment of premium products and living and consumption spaces.

The Experimental pillar is linked to the launching of new products, services and concepts that will be assessed both commercially and operationally. Exclusive reinforces the chains pioneering spirit in offering products only in its stores, whether big brands, foodtechs, or private labels. Social concept refers to the living spaces, such as Espaço Café and solutions for immediate consumption such as the “Pra já + Pra Levar” sectors.
Fluid is connected to the technologies that optimize the shopping experience, such as Pre-Scanning, where consumers are directed to cashiers according to quantity of items and operators demand. Just like Self Checkout, where the customer himself completes his purchases without employees.
It´s worth reminding that the new stores are also under the concept of Ominicanality and Multiservices, which includes Click & Collect options for purchases made over the Internet and Express, where deliveries of online purchases are made within 4 hours.
In 2020, GPA forecasts an investment of almost R$ 2 billion in the Pão de Açúcar, Extra, Compre Bem and Assaí stores. This includes new Pão de Açúcar stores openings, between 5 and 10 points of sale, next year, plus 40 planned for the next three years, most of them will be in São Paulo. Also new is that the company intends to open Assaí’s first unit abroad, more precisely in Colombia and plans 50 more Minuto Pão de Açúcar stores.
