GPA stands out as the leading group in revenues in 2018, in spite of the retraction
Brazil has over 120 companies in the retail industry with revenues of over R$ 1 billion. Twenty-nine of them with more than 10,000 associates and 17 companies operate more than 1,000 stores nationwide. These data are from the most recent study carried out by the Brazilian Retail and Consumption Society (SBVC) about the “Top 300 Companies in the Brazilian Retail Market”.
The survey was carried out in partnership with BTR-Educação e Consultoria, Varese Retail and CEPEV – USP (Center for Retail Studies and Research), and the Käfer Content Studio. Results show that 182 companies, who were present in the last two editions of the study, presented a 7.9% nominal growth in sales, against 2.2% of all Brazilian retail market in the period according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
On the other hand, the study points out that 12% of the 300 largest companies in the industry had a decrease in 2018 income. In relation to Digital transformation, Brazilian retail companies are still timid about it, once only 3.4% of the sales are made online. However, 49% of the top 300 companies have well-structured e-commerce platforms.
GPA stands out in the domestic retail market
Study’s results show that GPA is the leading corporation in revenues among the companies of the Brazilian retail market, with an estimated income of R$ 84.12 billion in 2018, which corresponds to almost 13% of the top 300 companies’ income. Carrefour, on the other hand, is acknowledged as the largest retail company in Brazil, and its revenue of R$ 56.343 billion corresponds to 7% of the sales among all the other companies.
SBVC’s survey shows that supermarkets compose the sector with more companies in the Ranking, with 136 companies and, again, GPA Alimentar appears as the greatest employer of the industry in Brazil, with 94,000 employees. Moreover, 49 out of the 50 main companies, with the highest income per store, are supermarkets.
