The APAS Show Blog lists some tips so managers can reduce loss in the supermarket industry after an unfavorable rate in 2018
Results of the recent survey about the loss rates in the Brazilian supermarket industry has set off the alarm for many operations in the country. With almost R$ 7 billion in 2018, about 2% of the gross revenue, external theft (20%) and internal theft (7%) when added are only behind operational errors (40%).
In the face of this tough reality, managers start to search for solutions in order to minimize the losses. Among these solutions, it is worth mentioning the importance of technology, of efficient rules and procedures and, essentially, the importance of the people involved. We have listed below some measures that can be adopted by supermarkets of all sizes, formats and product assortment.
Recruitment and commitment
Among all measures that must be adopted to avoid theft in the store, the main one is to have a focused and motivated team. Minimizing and fighting internal theft starts by creating a pleasant work environment, with clear and reciprocal communication. Moreover, the recruitment should be based not only in ability and professional experience, but also in the candidate’s conduct and history.
Training and store layout
Well-trained teams can identify possible acts of theft before they happen by observing suspicious attitudes. On the other hand, it is important to eliminate blind spots in the supermarket’s monitoring cameras; Most of the time, the best option is to change the store layout. Mirrors and adequate lighting can solve this problem as well as short displayers that do not obstruct the camera view.
Know your loss
The first step to solve a problem is to know it completely. Therefore, it is necessary to verify the store statistics and find out what are the products with the higher theft rate, the period in which they happen and even the strategical places in the store where the losses are detected. Considering this information, it is possible to organize better the product place and invest in the necessary mechanisms for prevention.
Another important measure to avoid theft in supermarkets is to keep the sections monitored as long as possible. Manage staff hours in a way that the sales areas are always with employees circulating in order to minimize vulnerability.
A good option for positioning products of higher value in the supermarket, is to bring the section closer to the associates working in fixed positions. In order to ensure the security of items with a greater theft risk, the tip is using shelves that work with electronic protection, for instance.
The most used technology nowadays in supermarkets worldwide are based in CCTV monitoring (closed-circuit television). In order to improve this tool’s performance, it is important that the cameras can provide quality images so they can be used as evidence in case of thefts.
