More than 600 companies from the industry are registered as suppliers for the distribution to more than 400 organizations
Donating food to the Sesc Food Bank is one of the ways that supermarkets, industries and companies have to use completely their food in order to avoid waste. The project relies on about 600 registered companies that donate the food that are distributed to more than 400 social institutions, shelters, daycares and hospitals.
With this program, Sesc serves 130 thousand people in Pernambuco State; and only this year, 642.3 ton of food was donated in the State. Among the items that are part of the donations, there are roots, fruits, vegetables and dairy products. In order to enjoy adequately the food, every two months Sesc trains the representative of each institution in how to receive and handle the food.
Industry stimulating the conscious consumption
Besides showing the use of peels and seeds that would be wasted, the idea is to stimulate the construction of more diversified menus and teach to transform food into flour, juice and pulps, for instance. One of the largest companies of the food industry, Nespresso stimulates the conscious consumption with a monitoring program for the bean production, in addition to reusing the coffee capsules.
In order to do so, the company has points of collection for the coffee capsules in more than 15 cities in Brazil, reusing the package and the coffee powder. According to the Abras (Brazilian Supermarket Association) survey, the losses in the industry reached R$ 6.4 billion in 2018 and in order to prevent these losses, Carrefour, for instance, started to sell products considered as “ugly”, by having distinctive aesthetics features, with discounts for their customers.
